The perception that Microsoft offers nearly everything to its employees in a convenient manner, while also pushing them to work excessively, has led to this characterization, potentially harming their long-term health. The nickname “Velvet Sweatshop” for the company, coined in a 1989 Seattle Times article, has been adopted by some of Microsoft’s own employees to describe their workplace.
